Earlier this year, ACRRM proudly sponsored one registrar to attend the RDAQ Conference. The recipient, Clancy Read, has shared his reflections on the experience, highlighting how the conference expanded his clinical knowledge, strengthened his passion for rural medicine, and helped shape his future career aspirations.

Supporting our registrars goes beyond training—it's about creating opportunities to connect, learn and be inspired.

"I would like to sincerely thank ACRRM for sponsoring my attendance at the RDAQ Conference in Cairns this year.

The conference was an incredibly valuable experience, and one of the major highlights was meeting fellow rural doctors from across Australia. Having the opportunity to connect with people working in a wide range of settings and hearing about their journeys has inspired me to think differently about the many avenues available throughout my training and beyond.

I am now over halfway through my ACRRM training and at a crossroads when it comes to pre-fellowship decisions, looking ahead to where I may eventually practise as a Fellow and what opportunities lie ahead. I currently work in Cairns with RFDS Primary Care and in Cairns ED undertaking my AST. I would like to continue living in Far North QLD and as my next career step I am eager to work in the Torres Strait and Cape or continue with CHHHS in regional sites. Being able to speak with doctors currently working in these areas was a brilliant opportunity to learn what day-to-day practice looks like, their individual journey’s and what they love about their work.

I also enjoyed several of the conference breakout sessions, especially the lectures on myopericarditis, agricultural zoonoses, and a practical approach to persistent pain. These were all high yield sessions for ACRRM training and ones that I have not had significant learning on in the past. I came away with updated knowledge that I can directly apply to my clinical practice.

Beyond the educational content, the conference reinforced why I chose rural generalism in the first place. It was inspiring to be surrounded by passionate clinicians who are making a real difference in their communities and who continue to advocate for rural and remote healthcare. The experience has left me feeling motivated and excited for the next stages of my training and the opportunities that lie ahead.

Thank you again to ACRRM for providing me with this opportunity and for continuing to support registrars in accessing experiences such as the RDAQ Conference. It was an extremely worthwhile and memorable experience."
