They are bright. They are bold. They are a little bit Far Out! And they are designed to get doctors talking.

The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and social impact workwear brand TradeMutt have teamed up to create a limited-edition scrub top with a serious purpose: starting conversations about doctors’ mental health.

Launched for Mental Health Month, Far Out! celebrates the Rural Generalists caring for rural, remote, and First Nations communities—and reminds doctors to check in with themselves and each other.

Hidden among the colour is TradeMutt’s “This Is A Conversation Starter” QR code. It connects directly with TIACS, a free and confidential counselling service providing access to up to eight sessions with the same qualified counsellor.

ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says Rural Generalists are experts at looking after others, but may find it much harder to admit when they need support themselves.

“Rural Generalists work in demanding environments, often a long way from their family, friends, and usual support networks,” Dr Martin says.

“They ask patients how they are going every day. These scrubs are a colourful prompt to ask a colleague that same question—and to be ready to listen to the answer.

“They are certainly going to be noticed. That is the point. A comment about a scrub top can become a conversation that really matters.”

The idea behind the design

Far Out! begins with ACRRM Fellow, Associate Professor David Rimmer, whose fabulous loud shirts regularly spark conversations on the TradeMutt Theory of Change wherever he wears them.

For Associate Professor Rimmer, the message is deeply personal. He champions mental health awareness following the loss of his brother to suicide in his late 20s.

“When I wear my TradeMutt shirts—which is most of the time—people notice and ask what they are about,” Associate Professor Rimmer says.

“That gives me an opening to talk about mental health without making the conversation feel forced or uncomfortable.

“Now Rural Generalists across Australia can wear that message into hospitals, clinics, and communities.

“If these scrubs encourage one person to check in with a colleague, speak honestly about how they are feeling, or reach out for support, they have done their job.”

Looking after those who look after us

Profits from every Far Out! scrub top will be donated to Doctors’ Health Alliance, supporting its work to improve the health and wellbeing of doctors and medical students across Australia.

Doctors’ Health Alliance Chair Dr Margaret Kay says the collaboration combines visibility, conversation, and practical support.

“Doctors and medical students need to know that looking after their own health is not optional—it is essential,” Dr Kay says.

“We welcome the support of ACRRM and TradeMutt and the opportunity to reach doctors working in communities across the country.

“Every conversation helps challenge stigma and reminds doctors that confidential support is available when they need it.”

The limited-edition Far Out! scrub top is available for $75 through the ACRRM website.
