Roma will host a major celebration on 2–3 October as the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway (QRGP) marks 20 years since its beginnings.

Returning to the “spiritual home” of rural generalism in Queensland, this milestone event promises to be both a reunion and a forward-looking gathering.

The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) CEO, Marita Cowie, and then ACRRM President Dr Bruce Chater were part of the original Roma Agreement meeting.  They will return to Roma alongside current ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin and many graduates of the program, to celebrate the success of the QRGP and the recent recognition of Rural Generalist Medicine as a specialist field of practice.

ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says the atmosphere in Roma is set to be one of celebration and pride.

“This is more than just an anniversary - it’s a chance to recognise the incredible achievements of the Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway and the people who have driven it over the past 20 years.

“We’ll be celebrating how far we’ve come but also looking to the future and reaffirming our shared commitment to Rural Generalist Medicine where it is most needed.”

The two-day program will be co-hosted by QRGP Medical Director, Dr Prue Wallin, and multi-award-winning broadcaster Dr Norman Swan, who attended the original Roma Agreement in 2005 and the 10-year anniversary in 2015.

Attendees will reflect on the journey so far and contribute to shaping the future of rural generalism, with a strong sense of unity, action, and celebration.
