The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) announces Dr Claire Arundell as its next President, ushering in a new chapter for the College.
A Rural Generalist with Advanced Specialised Training in Anaesthetics, educator, instructor, past Chair of College Council and respected College leader, Dr Arundell has spent her career caring for communities across almost every Australian state and territory. She currently lives on Norfolk Island.
Dr Arundell will formally commence as President following ACRRM's Annual General Meeting in October, succeeding outgoing President Dr Rod Martin.
Dr Martin congratulated Dr Arundell and welcomed the next generation of leadership.
"Claire brings energy, experience and an unwavering commitment to rural practice," Dr Martin says.
"She has dedicated countless hours to strengthening the profession, while never losing sight of what matters most – our members and the communities they serve.
"I know ACRRM will flourish under her leadership."
Dr Arundell says she is honoured and excited to lead the College at a time when Rural Generalists have never been more important.
"Becoming President is a real privilege," Dr Arundell says.
"I've been fortunate to learn from so many outstanding Rural Generalists throughout my career, and I'm excited to work with our members to keep building a College that supports, inspires and advocates for our profession.
"I’m constantly inspired by my colleagues. Every day, I see ACRRM Rural Generalists stepping up for their communities with skill, compassion and an incredible breadth of expertise. It's a profession unlike any other, and I'm passionate about making sure it's recognised, supported and continues to thrive."
Dr Arundell paid tribute to outgoing President Dr Rod Martin and the leaders who have helped establish Rural Generalist Medicine as a recognised and respected medical specialty.
"I'd like to thank Dr Rod Martin for his leadership and unwavering commitment to the College," she says.
"Rod has helped strengthen our profession and our College, and I am grateful for his mentorship and friendship. He, and the ACRRM Presidents before him, have helped build the strong foundations we have today. I look forward to building on that legacy as we continue training the next generation of Rural Generalists and advocating for equitable healthcare for rural, remote and First Nations communities."
College elections for College Council representatives from Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania, as well as a registrar director on the board will be held 14 August to 11 September 2026.
