Suzette Chemello has helped transform healthcare in the Kimberley, leading a model of care that keeps patients close to home. Her achievements as practice manager in Kununurra have now been recognised with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) 2025 Outstanding Contribution to Rural Practice Management Award.
For the past 14 years, Suzette has called Kununurra home, dedicating eight of those years to managing Wunan Health (formerly Kununurra Medical). Originally from Albany, she first discovered the town while travelling around Australia with her husband — and went on to become a cornerstone of the community’s healthcare system.
Under her leadership, Wunan Health has introduced an innovative model of care that allows patients to stay within their communities while accessing high-quality services. She has supported at least 20 registrars to complete their training and welcomed countless Rural Generalists and rural General Practitioners, ensuring continuity of care in a region where workforce turnover is a constant challenge.
ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says Suzette is also recognised for the culture she has built within the clinic.
“Suzette’s contribution goes far beyond administration,” Dr Martin says.
“Known as the “heart of the practice,” she fosters a workplace where staff feel supported, connected, and cared for — creating a positive environment that has underpinned the clinic’s success and stability, and has kept her community connected.
“We are proud to honour her with this award.”
The Outstanding Contribution to Rural Practice Management Award is one of ACRRM’s highest honours, celebrating leaders who combine innovation with long-term dedication to rural and remote healthcare.
The award was announced at Rural Medicine Australia 2025 (RMA25) in Perth, co-hosted by ACRRM and the Rural Doctors Association of Australia.
