Rural Generalist obstetrician Dr Sally Street has spent her career serving rural and remote communities, advocating for reform, and mentoring the next generation of doctors. That journey is being recognised with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) 2025 Rural Generalist of the Year Award.
The award celebrates Rural Generalists who embody the breadth of rural practice, deliver outstanding patient care, and demonstrate leadership in advancing healthcare for rural, remote, and First Nations Australians.
Dr Street’s career spans more than a decade of clinical service and leadership across the breadth of Australia. She has cared for some of the nation’s most remote communities, with particular expertise in women’s health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and obstetrics.
Alongside her clinical work, Dr Street has played a pivotal role in medical education and advocacy. As ACRRM’s Tasmanian Regional Director of Training, and now as a Lead Medical Educator, she supports registrars and inspires future Rural Generalists. She has been instrumental in championing the Rural Generalist model in Tasmania, engaging governments, stakeholders, and media to build understanding and drive reform.
ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says Dr Street exemplifies the skill, leadership, and vision of Australia’s Rural Generalist doctors.
“Sally’s career reflects the very best of rural generalism,” Dr Martin says.
“Her advocacy for healthcare reform and Rural Generalist recognition, her leadership in education, and her commitment to delivering care in some of the most remote parts of Australia make her an extraordinary recipient of this award.”
Recently relocating to Queensland for family commitments, Dr Street continues to work across rural, remote, and First Nations communities, including a new position in Roma, Queensland.
Dr Street was selected from an exceptional group of state award winners recognised earlier, including Dr Sarah Goddard from Tennant Creek, Northern Territory; Dr Andrew Scott from the Capricorn Coast, Queensland; Dr Peter Nesbitt from Echuca-Moama, Victoria; and Dr Rowena Conway from Jamestown, South Australia.
The award was announced at the Rural Medicine Australia 2025 (RMA25) gala dinner, co-hosted by ACRRM and the Rural Doctors Association of Australia in Boorloo (Perth).
