Echuca-Moama’s Dr Peter Nesbitt has been recognised with the 2025 Victorian Rural Generalist of the Year Award by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).
The award celebrates Rural Generalists who demonstrate outstanding commitment to best-practice care in rural, remote, and First Nations communities, and who go above and beyond to ensure their patients receive the highest quality healthcare.
Dr Nesbitt graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1988 and, after early training in Wollongong and two years serving in a rural Zambian village, moved to Echuca/Moama where he has provided GP and obstetric services since 1995.
He is the practice owner of Echuca Moama Family Medical Practice and also works as a Visiting Medical Officer at Echuca Regional Health across multiple specialties.
One of the first ACRRM Fellows in 1995, Dr Nesbitt has always embraced the Rural Generalist model of care.
Outside of medicine, Dr Nesbitt is deeply connected to his community and family. Married to Johanna, with whom he has four children, he is a keen lawn bowler and has completed five Ironman events.
ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin congratulates Dr Nesbitt on the recognition.
“Dr Nesbitt has dedicated decades of service to rural communities both in Australia and abroad. “His skill, compassion, and commitment to providing a broad scope of care exemplify what it means to be a Rural Generalist.
“He also demonstrates a commitment to the Echuca-Moama community through his involvement in sport, and commitment to delivering high quality healthcare.”
The Rural Generalist of the Year Awards recognise doctors who hold expertise across a broad scope of practice, demonstrate strong community connection, and are committed to addressing the workforce and healthcare delivery challenges of rural and remote Australia.
Each state winner is now in line for the National Rural Generalist of the Year Award, which will be announced at Rural Medicine Australia 2025 (RMA25) in Boorloo (Perth) from 22–25 October.
