Dr Rebecca Devitt, Rural Generalist obstetrician and staff specialist at Mudgee Health Service, has been selected to attend the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) Emerging Leaders Conference in October.

Dr Devitt is already a well-recognised leader in rural medicine, serving as Chair of ACRRM’s Education and Training Committee, a representative on the Education Council, and a member of the Board of Examiners.

Locally, she supervises doctors at Mudgee Hospital and has been part of a community drive to attract and support new doctors to the region -  from mentoring high school students to speaking with medical students about careers in rural generalism.

She also spearheaded the establishment of a hospital-based antenatal clinic in Mudgee, ensuring local women can access maternity care despite challenges in doctor supply.

“I grew up in the country, and I know how important it is for young people to see that a career in rural medicine is both possible and rewarding,” Dr Devitt says.

“I hope to use this opportunity to gain fresh insights into ACRRM’s vision for rural generalism, connect with like-minded peers, and bring back new ideas that will strengthen rural medicine both here in Mudgee and nationally.”

ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says Dr Devitt’s selection reflects her outstanding leadership and her dedication to both her community and the College.

“Dr Devitt has shown enormous commitment to mentoring the next generation and improving services in her hometown.

“Her leadership journey is a wonderful example of the values at the heart of rural generalism,” he says.

The Emerging Leaders Conference will take place on Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) WA) immediately before the Rural Medicine Australia 2025 (RMA25) conference hosted by ACRRM and the Rural Doctors Association of Australia in Boorloo (Perth).
