Margaret River Rural Generalist obstetrician Dr Liam Walsh has been selected to take part in a national leadership conference for emerging rural healthcare leaders.
Dr Walsh will attend the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) Emerging Leaders Conference at Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) WA, this October. He is one of just 23 Rural Generalists chosen from across the country to take part in the program, which is being held in the lead-up to the nation’s largest Rural Medicine Australia Conference in Boorloo (Perth).
Dr Walsh works across general practice, obstetrics, and emergency care, and is the clinical lead for Margaret River Hospital.
He said he was honoured to be selected and looks forward to learning from fellow Rural Generalists about how to strengthen the role of generalists in rural, remote, and First Nations communities.
“I’m passionate about fostering an environment where Rural Generalists can work to their full scope and provide holistic care,” Dr Walsh says.
“I believe rural hospitals can offer excellent, patient-centred services when we combine the breadth of Rural Generalist care with strong specialist support.
“Through this conference, I hope to build connections and create opportunities which will help our local services continue to thrive.”
ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says the conference is designed to build leadership skills and confidence among future health leaders in rural and remote Australia.
“Rural Generalists like Liam are doing incredible work across hospital, general practice and specialist services such as maternity care.
“This program is about backing their leadership potential and helping them shape the future of rural healthcare,” Dr Martin says.
