Providing high-quality maternity care close to home is one of the motivations driving Rural Generalist doctor Dr Beth Exell. 

Currently working in the Mount Isa Hospital Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Dr Exell has been selected to attend the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine's (ACRRM) Emerging Leaders Conference in Adelaide from 18–20 October 2026. 

A recently Fellowed Rural Generalist, Dr Exell says the conference presents an opportunity to further develop her career and leadership capabilities. 

"I've seen firsthand the tangible benefits that cohesive services and consistent leadership can bring to both patients and communities," Dr Exell says. 

"I've also seen how important it is for rural communities to have familiar, approachable clinicians who understand the local context and are committed to staying." 

Dr Exell completed most of her training across Cairns and the Hinterland before returning to undertake Advanced Specialised Training in Obstetrics. 

She is also passionate about supporting equitable access to healthcare and believes continuity of care plays an important role in building trust within communities. 

"This is especially important in First Nations communities, where long-term relationships and consistency can make a real difference to people's experiences of healthcare," she says. 

ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says Dr Exell's commitment to rural medicine and maternity care reflects the important role Rural Generalists play in supporting communities like Mt Isa. 

"Dr Exell has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing her skills and building a career that supports rural families and communities," Dr Martin says. 

"The Emerging Leaders Conference will help participants develop the confidence, networks and leadership capabilities needed to strengthen healthcare services across rural and remote Australia." 

Dr Exell says she is looking forward to connecting with fellow Rural Generalists and learning from experienced College leaders from across the country.
