Dr Campbell is Censor-in-Chief for the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine and has served for many years on the ACRRM Board, first as the Victorian Director, then Vice President, and President 2005-2007. He is a foundation member and Fellow of the College.
Dr Campbell has practised as a rural doctor in Lakes Entrance, Victoria since 1983 and currently runs a fully-integrated teaching practice with 13 doctors.
He served on the Board of the Rural Workforce Agency of Victoria from 1998 until 2008.
From 2002 until 2018, Dr Campbell was Associate Professor and Director of the Monash University School of Rural Health in East and South Gippsland. This involved initial development of the School and eventually placement of more than 30 medical students per year in full-year longitudinal integrated clinical clerkships in local rural practices.
Dr Campbell has special interests in medical education, rural medical workforce and emergency medicine, and was the inaugural lead author and a Lead Instructor for the Rural Emergency Skills Training (REST) Course in Australia.
