About Dr Peter Baker

After junior hospital posts following qualification from Bristol University in 1970 Emeritus Professor Peter Baker obtained an MD from coeliac disease research. He then worked as a specialist physician and paediatrician in the South Yemen, before coming to Australia in the mid-seventies to work as a GP, mainly in rural and remote areas. After anaesthetic training in the UK, he worked as a rural GP anaesthetist in Newfoundland and Saskatchewan, Canada, for a year.

On returning to Australia in 1979 he worked as a GP in Townsville for 20 years until taking up an academic appointment in rural general practice at the University of Tasmania. He then took up the role as Director of the Rural Clinical School at The University of Queensland for a decade. He currently works fulltime at the Commonwealth Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
