Ultrasound Program 2012

All ACRRM/SonoSite Ultrasound Workshops are accredited for PDP points and also accredited for claiming against the Emergency Medicine component of the Procedural Grants ($2,000 for day) for eligible participants (practitioners working in RA2-RA5) who are registered in RPGP (Rural Procedural Grants Program) prior to workshop attendance.  Relevant to the content of these workshops - claiming against the Anaesthetics and Obstetrics components is also considered. For further information: RPGP Registration.

Places are strictly limited to 20 participants for these ‘hands-on’ workshops ensuring maximum training benefit.  Please see 2012 Program following and Register early.

BRIEF OVERVIEW OF VARIOUS WORKSHOP CONTENT 

Introduction to Ultrasound in Rural Emergency Medicine

Introductory level workshops have been designed for Rural Emergency Medicine/Critical Care Physicians and General Practitioners with little or no prior ultrasound experience. 

These workshops are sometimes designed to include components of Ultrasound use in Anaesthetics, Retrieval Medicine and basic Obstetrics -  with these inclusions relevant to Presenter's/experienced Clinician's speciality area.

Hands-on scanning and technique practice on live 'patients/models' are a feature of these workshops. General Topics around Ultrasound use in Emergency Medicine covered in these workshops can include such as:

  • Ultrasound Physics and Knobology
  • Applications of ultrasound in practice
  • Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST)
  • Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm (AAA)
  • Other Abdominal (Kidney/Gallbladder)
  • Basic pregnancy
  • Pneumothorax
  • Vascular Access

Intermediate Ultrasound in Rural Emergency Medicine

Intermediate level workshops are designed for Rural Emergency Medicine/Critical Care Physicians and General Practitioners with some experience in using ultrasound in practice.  Intermediate level workshops are extended by providing a fuller hands-on experience - helping you with decision making - and understanding the role of ultrasound in practice.  You will be taken to the ‘next step’ – 'what to do with the image you have obtained'.

Topics covered in these workshops can include such as:

  • FAST Refresher
  • Hemothorax
  • Pneumothorax
  • Introduction to Echo
  • AAA Refresher
  • Gallbladder
  • Eye and DVT
  • Vascular Access Refresher
  • Overview of Nerves

Obstetric Ultrasound Workshops

Along with gaining an understanding of the ethics and why you perform obstetric ultrasound, and indications for same, these workshops aim to give you an understanding of the techniques and equipment relevant to obstetric ultrasound. Typically the hands-on supervised component of these workshops allow you to scan live models in first, second and third trimester pregnancy.

Topics covered in these workshops can include:

  • Obstetric scanning techniques - hints and tips
  • Diagnosis of early pregnancy including ectopic and miscarriage
  • Recognition of / or exclusion of multiple pregnancy
  • Transvaginal Scanning
  • Biometry
  • Placental localisation
  • Amniotic fluid assessment
  • Recognition of IUGU and Fetal Wellbeing
