Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute is a world renowned medical research facility focused on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Baker IDI is one of the five largest institutes in Australia, with central headquarters based in Melbourne. With close ties to Melbourne and established networks in Alice Springs and surrounding communities, the Alice Springs Branch's focus is on cardio-vascular, diabetes and other chronic diseases with high rates of prevalence among indigenous groups. Research is funded mainly through competitive and philanthropic grants and consultancies and is closely integrated with other research performed by the institute in Melbourne and elsewhere. In particular, The John T Reid Charitable Trusts has supported the Baker IDIs involvement in Indigenous health in Central Australia through the Margaret Ross Chair in Indigenous Health.
Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute is seeking to expand its reach and currently seeks expressions of interest from highly motivated people with a relevant research or clinical research background to assume the role of Executive Director Alice Springs and lead the dedicated team in Alice Springs on research and other activities that will help reduce the rate of chronic disease in indigenous communities.
A clinician may be a specialist in cardiology, paediatrics, endocrinology, diabetes, general practice, allied professions or other related areas. A joint appointment with the Alice Springs Hospital and/or other local health service can also be negotiated if appropriate. Expressions of interest from clinicians who wish to establish their research career relevant to indigenous health are also welcome.
