International Medical Graduates are increasingly an important part of the fabric of medical services in rural and remote Australia. ACRRM has developed a number of assessment and support programs to assist International Medical Graduates enter general practice in Australia, and to expand their career opportunities.
There are three assessment pathways for International Medical Graduates wishing to be registered in Australia:
- The Specialist Pathway (successful completion leads to registration in the relevant speciality).
- The Competent Authority Pathway (successful completion leads to general registration).
- The Standard Pathway (successful completion leads to general registration).
Specialist Pathway
In October 2009, ACRRM was approved by the Australian Medical Council to undertake Specialist Pathway Assessment for the specialty of General Practice, in April 2010 ACRRM opened their Specialist Pathway in the specialty of general practice and information regarding how to apply, the fee structure, and the assessment process can be found here.
Competent Authority Pathway for General Practice
In August 2010, ACRRM was approved by the Australian Medical Council to undertake Competent Authority Pathway Assessment for IMG's wishing to practice in the speciality of General Practice via its work-based place assessment modality. Standard Pathway
ACRRM has been approved by the Australian Medical Council to undertake Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interviews as part of the Standard Pathway in Queensland and in other States shortly. Information regarding the PESCI process can be found here.
