IMG PESCI Assessment

International Medical Graduates seeking registration with the Medical Board of Australia

Why an interview is required

As a result of the Council of Australian Governments International Medical Graduates assessment initiative, every international medical graduate (IMG) applying for registration via the Standard or Competent Authority Pathway in Australia is expected to attend a pre-employment structured clinical interview (PESCI).

In line with this expectation, the Medical Board of Australia and Australian Health Practicitoner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) have agreed to implement PESCIs as a mandatory prerequisite for IMGs seeking registration in Australia to practice in any of the following roles:

  • general practitioners
  • all non-specialist positions in private hospital facilities
  • senior medical officers
  • medical officers (with or without right of private practice)
  • medical superintendents (with or without right of private practice)

The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) has been authorised by AHPRA - Queensland to undertake the PESCIs on its behalf.  The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine will also be conducting PESCIs in other States in the near future.

For more information about registration requirements in Australia please visit the International Medical Graduate page at the AHPRA website.
