International Medical Graduates seeking registration with the Medical Board of Australia
Why an interview is required
As a result of the Council of Australian Governments International Medical Graduates assessment initiative, every international medical graduate (IMG) applying for registration via the Standard or Competent Authority Pathway in Australia is required to attend a pre-employment structured clinical interview (PESCI).
In line with this expectation, the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) have agreed to implement PESCIs as a mandatory prerequisite for IMGs seeking registration in Australia to practice in any of the following roles:
- general practice
- all non-specialist positions in private hospital facilities
- senior medical officers
- medical officers (with or without right of private practice)
- medical superintendents (with or without right of private practice)
Please note that a PESCI is position specific and state/territory specific, a PESCI completed in one state/territory may not be accepted in another state/territory. You should speak to AHPRA in the first instance if you are changing state/territory to see if you need to complete another PESCI.
