Applications

Applications for the Anaesthetics component of the General Practitioner Procedural Training Support Program (GPPTSP) are now closed.

The General Practitioner Procedural Training Support Program is funded by the Australian Government and managed by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (Anaesthetics component) and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (Obstetrics component).

Following a successful pilot program last year to train six rural doctors in anaesthetics, the Commonwealth has boosted the number of places for the 2011 training year to 16 and 15 for the 2012 training year.

Background

The Maternity Services Review report Improving Maternity Services in Australia, delivered in February 2009, identified the need to improve access to maternity services for women in rural and remote locations. There was little incentive for rural GPs to undertake additional training to broaden their skills base so that they can provide more comprehensive services to their communities. A copy of the report is available at: http://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/msr-report.

In response, the Government announced the 2009-10 Budget a package of measure including a support program for GPs to complete the procedural training program in obstetrics or anaesthetics. The initiative targets existing GPs in rural and remote areas and, accordingly, limits support to GPs practicing in those areas.
