Clinical guidelines update integral to maintaining best practice

Your biannual updates of ACRRM Clinical Guidelines for mobile devices will be available in a couple of weeks. The new edition of the guidelines will include a vast range of critical, quick reference material: from dental emergencies and snake bite to plastering, radiology, and dermatology. This next update of ACRRM Clinical Guidelines expands on the content and reviews older guidelines.

Almost 40 rural GPs apply for $40,000 grant in first week

The keenness of rural GPs to gain advanced skills was evidenced in this past week when ACRRM received almost 40 applications from GPs to undertake the 'Advanced Rural Skills Training in Anaesthesia'. $40,000 will be available for up to 15 rural GPs currently working in RAs 2 to 5.

The diverse backgrounds and interests of keynote speakers at Rural Medicine Australia 2012 clearly demonstrate that rural and remote medicine offers unlimited career choices and challenges. The three keynotes so far confirmed are Dr David Atkinson (Kimberley, WA), Dr Lachlan McIver (WHO, Fiji, pictured right) and Dr Tim Wolfe (Utah, USA, pictured left).

'Inspirational' ACRRM Fellow awarded Antarctic medal

ACRRM Fellow, Dr James DoubeACRRM Fellow, Dr James Doube, received the award for outstanding service to Antarctic expeditions to Macquarie Island. Dr Doube was the station doctor, search and rescue leader, field training officer and watercraft operator over a period of more than three years.

John Flynn mentors share $2,000 in prizes

The rewards for mentoring John Flynn students from the 2012 intake this year included a draw for professional prizes valued around $1,000. The prize for the established mentors was won by Dr de Souza of Tasmania (pictured, left) who has mentored students since 2008.  The prize for first-time mentors was won by Dr Lyndal Camden, NSW (pictured, right). From the 1,100 medical students who applied for a place in the program, 300 medical students have been carefully selected for placement with experienced rural doctors (RA2-5).

John Flynn student places demonstrate diversity

The diversity of locations of rural and remote medical practice is graphically demonstrated in this year's John Flynn student placements. Options range from Indigenous health services in the Northern Territory to the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). And the students are up for the challenge with about half of the 300 successful students listing one of these options in their preferences.

Free online learning modules on cardiovascular care

The Improving adherence to cardiovascular care – a toolkit for health professionals developed by the Heart Foundation now includes six online modules accredited by ACRRM for continuing professional development. The toolkit and online modules are designed to raise awareness among health professionals (GPs, practice nurses and pharmacists) of the issues affecting patient adherence to cardiovascular medicines and features tips on how to establish practice systems, modes of communication, and practical evidence-based interventions.
