This ACRRM run and accredited one-day Advanced Life Support (ALS) course was developed to meet the needs of general practitioners in the management of common emergencies in rural practice. The course incorporates key aspects of Advanced Life Support skills in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. These include:
- basic life support (e.g. understanding of, and practical competence in, one person and two person expired air resuscitation and external cardiac compression)
- airway management techniques that include Geudel's airway, bag and mask, oxygen therapy and either laryngeal mask or intubation
- use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) / biphasic defibrillators
- identification and management of basic arrhythmias
The course has been designed for GPs in rural and urban practice and is conducted by trained emergency medicine instructors experienced in rural general practice. The course, designed and presented by ACRRM, also offers our FACRRMs/PDP participants the opportunity to meet their ALS requirement for compliance for the Triennium.
The ACRRM ALS course is also accredited for eligible participants to claim for 1 day ($2,000) against the Rural Procedural Grant. The program content allows for claiming against the Emergency Medicine component or Anaesthetics component of the grant. (For further information on Procedural Grants please see relevant information via this website - search under 'Programs').
