ACRRM Annual Reports

2010 - 2011

President Dr Jeff Ayton's report points out that the medical sector has arrived at a once-in-a-generation confluence of conflicting factors.

"Ageing supervisors and mentors will cease practise in the next five years. During this period, we will have an increase in medical student numbers jostling for limited training places. ACRRM Annual Report

Pleasing, though, is that an increased proportion of medical students are showing a preference for rural training. We must heed and wholeheartedly respond to this positive signal by investing in the rural generalism models to engage, raise, train, and sustain the next generation of rural and remote healthcare workforce while we have the mentors, supervisors and educators practising.

Vertically integrated rural generalist training, from medical school through prevocational to vocational training, can improve uptake, as has been demonstrated internationally, most notably in Canada.

With its maturity and clear focus on outcomes for rural and remote communities, ACRRM is the obvious peak body to lead, innovate and support the government initiatives to achieve successful reform across the rural and remote health sector."

In his report, the President, Dr Jeff Ayton notes that ACRRM is the first college to be accredited in all three pathways of IMG accreditation for general practice and our professional development and assessment modalities are the most appropriate for rural and remote Australia doctors. The College Censor, Professor Richard Murray, reviews advances in education and training and identifies flexibility as the hallmark of the ACRRM's registrar assessment process. He points to secure, locally invigilated on-line assessment and video-conference technology, which allows candidates to be examined in their home community, minimising the cost and disruption to their practices.
